Joliet JackHammers News Release

Schaumburg, IL– The Schaumburg Flyers (3-0, 34-17) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (0-3, 24-27) 6-to-2 in front of 3,649 fans on Wednesday night at Alexian Field. The JackHammers were swept in this three-game series, and they are on a four-game losing streak.

The JackHammers return home for a weekend series after a day off on Thursday.

The Flyers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Mario Delgado (1-for-5) started the scoring with a one-out 2-run home run to right-center field. It was his 12th home run and 47th/48th RBI of the season. Later in the inning with two outs, Chris Weekly (1-for-3) added a 2-RBI double for his 47th/48th RBI of the season.

Billy Malone (2-for-4) and Geoff McCallum (4-for-5) added RBI singles. JackHammers starting RHP Chris Spigner (0-3) pitched just two-thirds of an inning and faced 10 batters and McCallum was the final batter he faced. Spigner allowed eight hits, six runs (all earned), walked none and struck out none. He threw 46 pitches and endured the loss. The Flyers led 6-to-0 after one inning.

After Dan Firlit (1-for-3) led off the top of the 6th inning with a single, Jermaine Allensworth's (1-for-4) RBI double carried to the right-center field wall.

The double was his team leading 14th of the season. The JackHammers trailed 6-to-1.

A silver lining to this game was 7.1 scoreless relief pitching following Spigner's start. JackHammers rookie RHP Mike Ott pitched 2.1 innings, rookie RHP Matt Petrusek pitched 4 scoreless innings and RHP Robert Garvin struck out the side in his one inning of work.

Flyers starting RHP Hank Woodman (2-2) pitched into the top of the 9th inning and earned the win. John Lackaff (2-for-4) led off with an infield single. Josh Loggins (1-for-4) line drive to center field was trapped by the center fielder, and Lackaff would be forced out at second base. Corey Paul (1-for-4) singled to left field, and Loggins scored on shortstop Geoff McCallum's error because he mishandled the cut-off throw. The JackHammers trailed 6-to-2. Woodman pitched 8.1 innings. He allowed eight hits, two runs (both earned), walked none and struck out eight.

LOOSE GRAVEL: JackHammers starting LHP Brian Mazone was named the Rawlings/Daktronics Northern League Pitcher of the Week for July 5-11 because he was 1-and-0 with a 0.61 ERA (1 earned run in 16.1 innings pitched) with no walks and 14 strikeouts in two starts. A one-hit, complete game shutout on July 10 versus Lincoln was his second one-hitter of the season. Mazone has earned this weekly honor twice this season and four times since the '02 season. For the 8th time in team history, a JackHammer has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week.

LOOSE GRAVEL: John Lackaff's 1st inning single extended his hitting streak to 15 games. He is one game shy of tying the longest hitting streak in team history which was set by former JackHammer Anthony Monegan last season.

LOOSE GRAVEL: RHP Nathan Kent was placed on the disabled list (retroactive to June 30) with tendonitis in his right shoulder. Prior to Wednesday's game, the JackHammers signed infielder Tom Syska of Chicago Ridge who played his high school baseball at Marist. The JackHammers also signed 1B/DH Eric Welsh who resides in Mokena.

After Thursday's day off, the JackHammers return to Silver Cross Field on Friday for a three-game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs. RHP Darren Truty (4-4, 4.47) will start for the Saltdogs, and LHP Brian Mazone (6-2, 1.96) will start for the JackHammers.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a JackHammers floppy hat courtesy of Three Rivers Association of Realtors. It will be an All-American Friday as the JackHammers will be wearing red, white and blue jerseys that will be auctioned to the fans after the final Friday home game. WJOL presents a post-game fireworks display. For tickets to future JackHammers games, call 815-726-BALL (2255) or visit the Silver Cross Field ticket office. The JackHammers will host the 2004 Northern League All-Star Skills Competition and Game (July 19 & 20) presented by Budweiser. Tickets are available for these two events.
