FORMER NORTHERN LEAGUER GEORGE SHERRILL PROMOTED TO SEATTLE MARINERS

Another Northern League alumnus has been promoted to the major leagues as the Seattle Mariners purchased the contract of lefthanded pitcher George Sherrill from Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League today.

Sherrill, who was to pitch in tonight's Triple A All-Star Game in Pawtucket, RI, will join the Mariners for their second half opener on Thursday against Cleveland at Safeco Field.

Sherrill was 4-2 with a 2.32 era and 13 saves, second most in the Pacific Coast League, in 36 games with the Rainiers this season. The lefthander had just nine walks and 62 strikeouts in 50.1 innings of work.

Sherrill pitched in the Northern League with Sioux Falls in 2001 and Winnipeg in 2002 and 2003. He was 3-5, 3.07 with the Goldeyes in 2002 and started 2003 at 1-0, 1.13 in 16 games before he was purchased by the Seattle organization on July 2. The lefty helped the Mariners' San Antonio club to the 2003 Texas League title, going 3-0, 0.33 in 16 games.

Sherrill becomes the 29th player to advance to the major leagues after a stint in the Northern League. He is one of five Northern League alumni currently on an active major league roster, joining Atlanta outfielder J.D. Drew, Kansas City pitcher Nate Field, Boston infielder Kevin Millar, and Chicago Cubs infielder Rey Ordonez..
