
Northern League names Player and Pitcher of the Week

Third baseman Chris Weekly of the Schaumburg Flyers and lefthander Brian Mazone of the Joliet JackHammers have been selected as the Northern League's Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of July 5-11, the league office announced today.
Weekly, the Rawlings/Daktronics Player of the Week, batted .444 (12-27) with 4 homers and 10 rbi in seven games as the Flyers captured the South Division First Half title. For the week, he led the league in homers and rbi, was tied for first in runs (9) and hits and ranked second in slugging (.926).
The South Division starter at third base in next Tuesday's All-Star Game, Weekly is eighth in the league with a .347 average and is tied for third with 12 homers and 46 rbi.
Mazone, the Rawlings/Daktronics Pitcher of the Week, was 1-0 with a 0.61 era (1 er/16.1 ip) with no walks and 14 strikeouts in his two starts last week. The lefty topped the league in innings and strikeouts. Mazone tossed a one-hit complete game shutout, his second one-hitter of the season, on July 10 against Lincoln and held Sioux City to one run in 7.1 innings without a decision in a 2-1 Joliet victory on July 5.
In 2004, Mazone, who will also represent the South Division in next week's All-Star Game in Joliet, is 6-2 with a 1.96 era in 10 starts. He leads the league in strikeouts (71), has the second lowest era, and is tied for third in wins. This is his second Pitcher of the Week Award this season as he was previously named, May 24-30.
Other players who received nominations were Bryon Jeffcoat of Fargo-Moorhead, Matt Howe of Gary, John Lackaff of Joliet, Chad Hill of Kansas City, Kevin Sullivan of Lincoln, Adam Olow of St. Paul, and Marcel Longmire of Sioux City. Pitchers nominated included Fargo-Moorhead's Ray Clark, Gary's Chris Andel, Kansas City's Jon McDonald, Lincoln's Darren Truty, St. Paul's Chris Chavez, Schaumburg's Matt Bailie, and Sioux City's Tony Evans.
