Zephyrs Take Opener, 18-5

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Bryan Petersen hit two home runs and Vinny Rottino was 5-for-6 with three RBI leading the New Orleans Zephyrs (34-35) to an 18-5 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (29-40) before 8,168 Friday night at RedHawks Field at Bricktown.

Sean West (2-3) allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings for the winning decision for New Orleans. Ryan Rowland-Smith (2-7) allowed 14 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits in five and one-thirds innings for the loss.

Matt Dominguez knocked a two-out single and scored Bryan Petersen for a 1-0 New Orleans lead. The RedHawks responded with a pair of runs as Robinson Cancel doubled in J.B. Shuck for a 1-1 score. Cancel later scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 Oklahoma City lead.

New Orleans broke open a seven run second inning against Rowland-Smith. Pitcher Sean West laid down a bunt single to drive in the first run of the inning for a 2-2 score. Ozzie Martinez later notched a two-out RBI single for a 3-2 New Orleans lead. Following a two-out error from second baseman Anderson Hernandez, Dominguez drove in three runs with a double to right-centerfield for a 6-2 lead. Dominguez later scored on a Vinny Rottino single for a 7-2 lead. On the same play, Joe Thurston scored on a throwing error by centerfielder Brandon Barnes for an 8-2 Zephyrs lead.

The Zephyrs added two runs in the fourth inning, one each on a Josh Kroeger RBI double and Vinny Rottino RBI single for a 10-2 score.

New Orleans added six runs in the sixth inning, with a two-run single from Oscar Salazar, Sean West RBI single and a three-run home run from Bryan Petersen for a 16-2 Zephyrs advantage. Vinny Rottino collected his fifth hit of the game in the seventh inning to score Thurston for a 17-2 game. Petersen belted a leadoff home run, his second of the game, in the eighth inning for an 18-2 New Orleans lead.

The RedHawks finished the scoring in the eighth inning when Tommy Manzella hit a three-run home run to left field, his fifth of the season, for an 18-5 final.
