Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Welington Castillo hit two home runs and collected six RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Albuquerque Isotopes (39-29) beat the Iowa Cubs (30-38) 13-10 at Isotopes Park tonight. Tyler Colvin finished a single shy of the cycle after a play that was originally called an infield hit in the ninth inning was changed to an error after the game.
Cubs' starter Jay Jackson (2-7) allowed nine runs on nine hits in four innings for his seventh loss in his last eight starts. The Isotopes scored six of those runs in the second inning. Trayvon Robinson started the rally with a solo home run. Eugenio Velez added a two-run triple that put the âTopes in the lead. Albuquerque had six hits in the inning, five went for extra bases.
In the fifth inning, the âTopes loaded the bases with none out to chase Jackson from the game. Marco Carrillo came in and walked Jamie Hoffmann to force in a run and then allowed four more as part of a five-run inning. Carrillo finished the final four innings on the mound for the Cubs and gave up a two-run homer to Hoffmann in the sixth inning to complete the Isotopes' scoring.
âTopes' starter John Ely (3-3) came up one out short of this third complete game of the season, but did get the win. He allowed two runs in the first inning. Bobby Scales walked to lead off the game and moved to third on a Colvin double. Both scored on a sacrifice fly by Castillo and a two-out double by Brad Snyder. The Cubs added two more in the third. Scales singled and scored on Colvin's triple. Bryan LaHair drove in Colvin with a groundout. Colvin hit a solo homer to left-center in the fifth inning that got the Cubs to within one at 6-5.
After the Isotopes added to their lead, Castillo launched his first home run with LaHair on base in the seventh inning. It cleared the scoreboard in left-center field and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
With the Isotopes leading 13-7 going into the top of the ninth, Ely struck out pinch-hitter Marquez Smith and Scales to start the inning. Colvin followed with a ground ball to the right side that went off the glove of first baseman Jerry Sands trying to make a backhanded play. The play was originally ruled a hit and it appeared that Colvin had recorded the first cycle by an Iowa Cubs player since Robin Jennings in 1997. It would have been the first since the team joined the Pacific Coast League. LaHair followed with a single and that chased Ely from the game after 110 pitches.
Castillo hit the first pitch from reliever Adam Dedeaux over the wall in center field for his second home run of the night to cut the lead to 13-10. Snyder followed with a single, but the game ended when Scott Moore lined out hard to third base. The scoring change made the three runs from Castillo's home run unearned.
The Cubs and Isotopes continue this series tomorrow night at 8:05 Central time. RH Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3-3, 6.79) will start for the Cubs against RH Tim Sexton (3-0, 3.25) for the Isotopes. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
