Sox rally late, but fall to Tucson 10-9

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox dropped a wild, back and forth game to the Tucson Padres 10-9 Saturday night in front of 5,373 fans at Security Service Field.

The Padres led the game 8-1 after a five-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Matt Clark. From there, the Sox would go on to score eight unanswered runs starting with an Ian Stewart solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

The score remained 8-2 until the bottom of the eighth as the Sox would explode for seven runs to take a 9-8 lead. Alfredo Amezaga started the rally with a two-run double. Mike Jacobs would follow a few batters later with a towering three-run home run to bring the Sox within a run at 8-7. After a walk to Brad Emaus, Jordan Pacheco smacked an RBI double high off the wall in left-center field, scoring Emaus and tying the game at eight. Pacheco would move to third on the throw home, allowing him to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch moments later.

However, the Sox were unable to hold the lead in the ninth. Jim Miller entered the game looking for his ninth-straight save of the year but quickly loaded the bases with nobody out. He induced a double-play grounder on the next batter but Kyle Banks scored from third to tie the game at nine. Moments later, Andy Parrino would give the Padres the lead with a triple to left. The Sox were unable to mount another rally in the ninth as they fell 10-9.

Miller (4-2, 5.27) took the loss and his first blown save of the year allowing two runs on four hits in an inning of work as the Sox fell to 32-38 on the year. Reliever Greg Burke (1-1, 5.63) picked up the win for the Padres and Luis Perdomo recorded the final three outs for his seventh save of the year as Tucson improved to 31-39.

Game three will pit RHP Billy Buckner (1-2, 5.98) against RHP Jeremy Hefner (4-4, 4.52). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
