Zach Scott's First Pro Home Run Not Enough
June 7, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - Zach Scott homered for the first time in his professional career but the Clinton LumberKings fell 2-1 to the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Community Field. The home run for Scott was the only LumberKings (29-30) hit of the night as they struggled to string anything together against Bees (34-26) pitching.
Clinton pitching, despite allowing just two runs, struggled. Three pitchers Chris Vallimont, Alex Vesia, and Elkin Alcala combined to issue 10 walks, the second most in a game this season.
The LumberKings started the scoring and briefly held a 1-0 lead following Scott's opposite field home run to left against Burlington starter Kyle Tyler.
Tyler (2-0) earned the win for a five-inning outing in which he allowed just one run on one hit while walking one and striking out four.
Burlington immediately answered the home run with a run in the bottom of the third. Vallimont walked the first batter of the inning and was pulled from the game two batters later when he allowed an RBI double to Harrison Wenson.
Alex Vesia replaced Vallimont and was hung with the loss for allowing the final run of the night.
Vesia (1-2) walked four over a 3.2 inning outing allowing the game's decisive run to score in the bottom of the fifth. Alvaro Rubalcaba doubled home the Bees second run of the night to cap an inning that featured two walks.
Luis Alvarado worked the final four innings for Burlington and was given the save for his time. He did not allow a run, did not surrender a hit, and walked one while striking out six.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the second game of their five-game series on Saturday night. Clinton will throw RHP Alberto Guerrero (2-1, 2.64) while the Bees will go with righty Jose Soriano (4-5, 2.68). Fans who cannot make it to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
