Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Sean Wymer took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Lansing Lugnuts (27-32) continued their successful road trip against the best teams of the Eastern Division, defeating the Lake County Captains (35-25), 6-4, in the opening game of a four-game series on Friday night at Classic Park.
The Lugnuts have won three of their first four games on the 11-game, ten-day trip, coming off winning two of three at the first-place Great Lakes Loons before handing this defeat to the second-place Captains.
Wymer (Win, 3-5) pitched 6 2/3 innings, limiting the Captains to two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out two, in his first quality start since April 18th.
Batterymate Gabriel Moreno, hitting second in the lineup, scored three of the Lugnuts' six runs; right fielder Griffin Conine, batting third, went 2-for-3 with a single, double and two walks; and All-Star first baseman Jake Brodt, hitting cleanup, went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in to bolster the offense, which scored one run in the third, two in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth.
Conine, the Blue Jays' No. 16 prospect as ranked by MLB.com, is hitting .471 (16-for-34) in his first nine games in the Midwest League.
Lake County starter Thomas Ponticelli (Loss, 2-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in five innings.
The Captains narrowed the Lugnuts' lead to 5-3 in the eighth and 6-4 in the ninth with solo tallies against relievers Mike Pascoe and Sean Rackoski, but Rackoski induced a game-ending groundout from Jose Fermin for his third save.
All-Star right-hander Cobi Johnson (5.24 ERA) starts the second game of the series at 7:00 p.m. Saturday against Captains right-hander Alex Royalty (4.91).
Lansing returns to Michigan's state capital for a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods from June 14-16, including Star Wars Night with post-game LAFCU Fireworks on Saturday, July 15th.
