Clinton LumberKings News Release
CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings suffered their fourth shutout loss of the season falling 1-0 in 10-innings to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night at NelsonCorp Field. Strong pitching from Humberto Mejia went to waste for the LumberKings (29-29) who dropped the series to Cedar Rapids (30-29) to fall into fifth place in the West.
Mejia worked around trouble for most of his night but turned in six shutout innings and was given a no decision for his time out. He allowed four hits while walking one and striking out six.
The Kernels consistently put pressure on LumberKings pitching all night - having the leadoff man reach in six of their 10 innings up.
C.J. Carter followed Mejia in relief and allowed no runs over his two innings of work while allowing two hits and did not issue a walk while striking out one.
Kernels starter Kody Funderburk was even sharper and did not allow a base runner to reach against him until the fifth inning. He was given a no decision and issued no walks while allowing no hits and striking out seven.
Derek Molina continued the shutout work for the Cedar Rapids pitching staff. He earned the win for the Kernels with two innings of work. Molina (2-1) allowed just one hit while walking one and striking out four.
The scoreless tie was broken in the top of the 10th when Cedar Rapids scored their free base runner that was placed at second base to start the inning (part of Minor League Baseball's extra inning rules).
Zach Neff worked the bottom of the tenth and stranded runners at first and second to earn his second save of the year.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the first game of a five-game series starting on Friday night. Clinton will throw RHP Chris Vallimont (3-4, 2.95) while the Bees will go with righty Kyle Tyler (1-0, 4.34). Fans who cannot make it to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio app. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
