Kane County Cougars News Release

Davenport, Iowa - R.J. Freure and Julio Robina combined to shutout the Kane County Cougars (31-29) in a 2-0 Quad Cities River Bandits (37-20) win on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. The Cougars were shutout for the fifth time this year.

Freure's night on the mound for Quad Cities began with two walks, but he used a pick off and two strikeouts to get out of the first. His highest leverage spot was in the third. Cougar lead-off man Daniel Wasinger singled. With one out Keshawn Lynch poked a double to right field, placing runners at first and third. Freure went on to strikeout Alek Thomas and retire Eduardo Diaz to end the threat.

Cougar starter Matt Tabor matched Freure early in the game. Tabor held Quad Cities scoreless over the first four innings. However, the Bandits got on the board in the fifth. Tabor allowed a one-out walk. With two outs, he allowed a single to Austin Dennis, putting runners at first and third. That was the last batter Tabor faced. Blake Workman inherited both runners and yielded an infield RBI single to Jeremy Pena to plate the first run of the night.

Quad Cities added on in the sixth. Trey Dawson's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. That run was unearned to Workman's line after a pickoff throw got away from the Cougar pitcher earlier in the inning.

Tabor (1-2) ended up taking the loss for the Cougars. He allowed one run on four hits over 4.2 innings. Workman's unearned run was all he allowed over 2.1 frames. Franklyn Soriano pitched a shutout eighth inning.

R.J. Freure (4-1) took home the win with 5.1 innings of two-hit ball. He struck out six Cougars. Julio Robina (1) worked around five walks to earn an 11-out save. In the seventh, Robina loaded the bases twice. He induced a 5-2-3 double play off the bat of Daniel Wasinger, loaded the bases a second time on a walk, then struck out Keshawn Lynch to end the inning.

The Cougars and River Bandits play game two of the series at 6:35 P.M on Saturday night. RHP Justin Lewis (3-3, 1.99) takes the ball for the Cougars versus RHP Brett Daniels (2-3, 1.76). Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
