Spokane Chiefs News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs capped their opening weekend with another road win Sunday evening, this time skating to a strong 4-1 victory over the Everett Silvertips. The game featured first Western Hockey League career goals for both Hayden Paupanekis (2007) and Mathis Preston (2008), as well as a dominant 36-save performance in net by Dawson Cowan (2005).
The teams were evenly matched through the opening period, going scoreless into the first intermission despite three power play opportunities for Spokane.
The Chiefs got on the board first just over four minutes into the second period when forward Paupanekis potted his first WHL goal as he poked in a rebound from a Berkly Catton shot right in front of the net. Defenseman Brayden Crampton also earned an assist on the play, marking his fourth assist of the season already and his first of two tonight. Spokane held onto the one-goal lead through the rest of the frame thanks to a successful penalty kill and a couple incredible stops by Cowan.
Spokane broke the game open in the third period, starting with a sharp-angle goal from the right side of the net by Catton (from Chase Bertholet and Will McIsaac) at 6:32. The Chiefs followed that up with two goals in less than a minute, the first coming from 15-year-old Preston at 7:07 for his first career WHL goal in his debut game. Cam Parr earned the assist - his first point of the season. Paupanekis padded the lead to 4-0 less than a minute later at 8:05 as he tipped in a rocket from Crampton in the slot.
Tarin Smith pulled one back for the Silvertips at 12:23, but it wasn't enough as the Chiefs closed out the rest of the frame to secure the 4-1 win.
Spokane went 3-for-5 on the power play and a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill, but were outshot by Everett 37-25.
Cowan impressed in the crease for the Chiefs with 36 saves and just one goal against, earning himself first star honors and his first win of the season (Paupanekis and Catton earned second and third stars, respectively).
Up next, the Chiefs head back to Spokane to host the rival Tri-City Americans in this season's home opener on Saturday, September 30 at 6:05 p.m.
