Yastrzemski Named Carolina League Player of the Week

July 7, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

SALEM, VA -The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Mike Yastrzemski has been named the Carolina League "Player of the Week" for June 30-July 6. The announcement was made on Monday morning by the Carolina League office. Promoted from Low-A Delmarva right after the All-Star Break, Yastrzemski becomes the fourth Keys player to take home a weekly honor in 2014. Michael Burgess was named Player of the Week for June 9-16, two weeks after Adrian Marin received the same accolade. Additionally, Parker Bridwell garnered pitcher of the week honors for May 12-19.

Monday's honor marks the first time that Yastrzemski, 23, has received a player of the week award in his professional career. Over six games, he hit .400 (12-for-22) with a home run, a triple, four doubles, eight RBIs and nine runs scored. The nine runs scored were the most by a Carolina Leaguer over the last week, and tied for second-most by an Advanced-A player. Meanwhile, the eight RBIs were good for second-most in the Carolina League, as Yastrzemski trailed only Burgess (12) in that category.

The Massachusetts native did a majority of his damage on Saturday night at Lynchburg, when he became the 12th player in the minors to hit for the cycle in 2014. In the game, he went 5-for-6 with a homer, a triple, two doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. He completed the feat in the ninth inning, with a triple to left-center. It was the first cycle by a Keys player since Jeff Fiorentino accomplished the feat on May 2, 2005 against Winston-Salem, and the first in the CL since Lynchburg's Matt Lipka did it on April 25, 2013 against the Dash.

Drafted by Baltimore in the 14th round of the 2013 draft out of Vanderbilt University, Yastrzemski was called up to Frederick on June 19, along with Trey Mancini and Jimmy Yacabonis. Named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team, the Keys outfielder hit .306 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs over 63 games with the Shorebirds. At the time of his promotion, he led the league in total bases (143), was second in runs scored (59), tied for second in slugging percentage (.554) and extra-base hits (34) and was third in hits (79). Yastrzemski is the grandson of Hall of Famer and Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski.

The Frederick Keys continue their seven-game roadtrip on Monday night, when they take on the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field. Mark Blackmar (4-1, 3.89) takes ball in game one of four, and will be countered by right-hander Joe Gunkel (1-1, 2.93). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. Frederick returns to Harry Grove Stadium on July 11, when the Potomac Nationals come to town.
