Lynchburg, Va. - The Carolina Mudcats uncorked four wild pitches and a passed ball that lead to three runs in a 5-4 loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday night at Calvin Falwell Field. The Mudcats (10-9, 39-47) have dropped three straight and the Hillcats (9-9, 43-45) scored their first home win over Carolina.

Shawn Morimando (8-3) suffered his first defeat since May 8 after allowing a season-high seven hits across four innings. The left-hander allowed four runs, the most since that loss to the Salem Red Sox.

Cody Scarpetta (3-2) held the Mudcats to two runs, one earned, on three hits over five innings for the win. He walked three and struck out six. Alex Wilson got the final two outs to notch his ninth save.

Jacob Lee tossed three innings for the Mudcats in relief. The right-hander held the Hillcats to one unearned run on three hits. Ben Heller struck out two in his debut and allowed one hit in his inning of work.

Lynchburg scored early against Morimando and the Mudcats. Eric Garcia began the opening frame with a single and moved to second on the first wild pitch. A bouncing single to center by Jose Martinez scored the second baseman for a 1-0 lead.

A walk to Will Skinner and another wild toss set up another Hillcats' run in the second inning. Emerson Landoni brought in Skinner with a single for a 2-0 lead.

Two errors by Lynchburg helped the Mudcats tie the score in the top of the third, however. James Roberts reached to lead off the inning after getting grazed by a pitch. Luigi Rodriguez laid down a bunt single and an errant throw by Scarpetta allowed Roberts to third. Logan Vick drew a walk to load the bases before Scarpetta struck out Erik Gonzalez. Joe Sever reached on a fielder's choice to score Roberts and a throwing error by Garcia allowed Rodriguez home to even the game at 2-2.

David Nick tripled on a smash to the right field corner and scored on a double by Martinez to put the Hillcats up 3-2 in the bottom of the third. Martinez was abled to steal third on a close play and Kevin Ahrens drew a walk to put two on. A grounder to first by Levi Hyams allowed Martinez across for a 4-2 advantage.

Lynchburg added another run in the seventh off Lee. Garcia singled to begin the stanza, moved to second on a wild pickoff throw and reached third on a passed ball. Lee unfurled a wild pitch to score what proved to be the deciding run.

Carolina got two across in the eighth inning against Nate Hyatt to draw closer. Sever reached on a fielding error by Ahrens and moved to second on a single by Yandy Diaz to right. Sabourin reached on a fielder's choice with one out and moved Sever to third. Alex Monsalve lined a single to right, scoring Sever, and Sabourin advanced to third. A balk by Wilson awarded Sabourin home, but the Hillcats' closer shut the door on the night's scoring.

Carolina continues their series against the Hillcats on Monday, July 8, in Lynchburg. First pitch at Calvin Falwell Field is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns home to host the Winston-Salem Dash with the first of four games on Friday, July 11.
