Carolina Mudcats News Release

The Series vs Lynchburg -- The Mudcats embark on their second trip to Lynchburg, Virginia this week. The Mudcats had a successful business trip the first time around, sweeping the Hillcats by a combined 23-13 score. For the season, the Mudcats have swept Hillcats twice (home and away) and own a .323 collective batting average through nine games. Carolina leads the overall series 27-22 and the team holds a 14-9 record at City Stadium.

Last Time Out -- The Salem Red Sox claimed the three-game set at Five County Stadium with an 8-2 win on Sunday afternoon. The Mudcats were held to eight base runners as Corey Littrell tied his career-long outing with seven innings pitched. Adam Plutko fell hard in the loss, surrendering six runs in six hits in just two innings. He faced seven hitters in the third without recording an out.

Tonight's Pitching Probables -- The Mudcats look to Shawn Morimando to set the tone for the short road trip. The left-hander has gone 5-0 over his last nine starts - including a spot start with Double-A Akron - and has lowered his ERA to 2.93. That pace is good enough for sixth best in the CL. Counting his debut with the Rub- berducks, Morimando made eight straight quality start before finishing after five innings his last time out. Cody Scarpetta makes his second straight appearance against the Mudcats. Coming off a seven-inning no-hitter, the righty allowed three runs on six hits in just three frames to Carolina. He walked five and fanned three in the los- ing decision.

Transactions -- The Cleveland Indians promoted RHP Ben Heller to Carolina from Lake County prior to today's game. Heller owned a 4-1 record in 28 appearances (all in relief) for the Captains. He fanned 64 in 37 innings pitched. He held opponents scoreless over his last 10 appearances (15.0 IP) with 33 strikeouts to earn the promo- tion. Outfielder Cody Ferrell was transferred to the Akron Rubberducks today as well. Ferrell saw limited action with the Mudcats, owning a .125 average through six appearances. Funky Cold Medina -- Yhoxian Medina extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double in the first inning on Sunday afternoon. During his streak, the infielder is hitting .421 (16x38) with seven extra-base hits. He has scored 10 times and brought around three. Coupled with four walks, Medina owns a .476 OBP during this stretch.

Our Compliments to the Cook -- Clayton Cook continues to gain strength and confidence on the comeback trail from a devastating shoulder injury. The right-hander was sidelined for nearly two full campaigns after suffering the injury in Wilmington on April 17. After allowing 14 runs over his first six outings (an 8.10 ERA), Cook has limited opposing offenses to one run over his last 10 1/3 innings. The 2008 draft pick has dropped his ERA down to 4.94.

Swimming the Bases -- The Mudcats continue to pace the CL in walks (334) and OBP (.346) as a group. The walks equate to nearly four per game. Carolina's offense also owns the third-best batting average on the circuit, entering Monday at a .263 pace. There is still room for improvement in run production, however, as the team is in the bot- tom half of the circuit at 4.4 per game.

Muddy's Tales -- The Mudcats return home to host the Winston-Salem Dash for four, fun-filled days. The series kicks off with Fireworks Friday, a 7 p.m. start, on July 11th. The SweetRight Brothers will be in town to entertain fans of all ages for Saturday's 6 p.m. tilt. Kids Run the Bases, presented by Amerigas, returns with a 2 p.m. mati- nee on Sunday, July 13 and the series wraps up with a special 11 a.m. start on Monday, July 14. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287 or by visiting carolinamudcats.com.
