WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 7, 2014) - Tyler Danish tossed six sensational innings, leading Winston-Salem to a 6-2 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at BB&T Ballpark on Monday night.
Danish (2-1) surrendered only three hits in his six innings of work, and his seven strikeouts fell one shy of a professional best. The 19-year-old threw 71 pitches in one of his best outings with the Dash since his promotion from Low-A Kannapolis on May 15.
Winston-Salem (10-9, 40-48) staked Danish to an early lead in the second inning. Michael Marjama singled against Myrtle Beach left-hander Victor Payano (3-6) to begin the rally. Zach Voight tripled to the right-center field gap to chase Marjama home and scored on Cleuluis Rondon's triple off the top of the left field fence. Rondon hustled home on Jacob May's sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Dash a 3-0 lead.
The home team added to its lead in the fourth inning. Serving as the sparkplug yet again, Marjama doubled to left field. Rondon crushed a two-run homer into the Foothills Brew Pen in left-center field to provide Winston-Salem with a 5-0 cushion. It was Rondon's first round-tripper since August 3, 2013, when he was with Low-A Kannapolis.
After Danish exited, Myrtle Beach (11-8, 55-32) finally broke through in the seventh inning against Dash reliever Dave Putman. Jorge Alfaro singled and scored on Royce Bolinger's double to left field, cutting the Pelicans' deficit to 5-1.
The Dash tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Grant Buckner led off the inning with his second double of the game before trotting home on Marjama's third hit of the contest, a triple to the right-center field gap to give Winston-Salem a 6-1 lead.
Myrtle Beach had one last gasp in the ninth inning against Dash reliever Jose Bautista. Nick Williams started the frame with a single and raced home on Bolinger's second run-scoring double of the game. Bautista settled down and caught Torres looking for his fourth punchout of the evening to preserve the win for Winston-Salem.
Fresh off back-to-back victories, the Dash will seek a share of first place in the Southern Division second-half standings when they clash with Myrtle Beach again on Tuesday night. Right-hander J.B. Wendelken (5-7, 4.44 ERA) will get the ball for Winston-Salem, while the Pelicans counter with lefty Luis Parra (7-4, 4.13 ERA).
First pitch at BB&T Ballpark is scheduled for 7 p.m. For tickets, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
