WINSTON-SALEM DASH (9-9, 39-48) vs. MYRTLE BEACH (11-7, 55-31)
RHP Tyler Danish (1-1, 5.16 ERA) vs. LHP Victor Payano (3-5, 4.84 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #88 (Home Game #44)
BARNUM, SANCHEZ PACE DASH IN ROUT Winston-Salem salvaged a game in its three-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks thanks to Sunday's 7-1 victory at BB&T Ballpark. In his Dash debut, righty Angel Sanchez limited the Blue Crew to one run on four hits over seven innings for his first victory of 2014. The Dash pulled away with five in the fifth inning, capped by Keon Barnum's three-run blast to left. Winston had only scored a combined three runs in its previous three contests.
BREAKING THE BROOMS Since BB&T Ballpark opened in 2010, Winston-Salem boasts a 191-133 (.590) record at home. The Dash have collected 19 sweeps at the downtown facility, yet the club has only been on the wrong end of two sweeps during that span, a number that remained intact due to Sunday's win. Winston-Salem has entered a series finale without a win at BB&T Ballpark just 12 times, and the Dash have won 10 of those games. Winston avoided a BB&T Ballpark sweep for its first 81 sets before Salem took all three from August 14-16, 2013. Frederick did the same in a rain-altered three-game series this April.
MATCHING THE HIGH BARNUM On Sunday, Dash slugger Keon Barnum lashed a three-run homer, his 15th professional long ball. Barnum had only launched one other home run of more than two runs, and it was another three-run dinger on June 21, 2012, in his third Minor League game with rookie-level Bristol. This was Barnum's only three-RBI showing in the Minors before Sunday.
STARTING ANEW Joey DeMichele's 14-game hitting streak, the longest by a Dash hitter since Marcus Semien's 18-game run from April 23-May 12, 2012, came to an end on Saturday. DeMichele bounced back with two hits and two RBIs in Sunday's series finale. Since the start of June, he is hitting .316 with 15 RBIs and 14 runs scored over 31 games. He posted a .236 batting average through May.
BRING ON THE BIRDS The Dash will play seven home games against first-place Myrtle Beach over the next 12 days, and all of them will take place at BB&T Ballpark. The Pelicans boast the best overall record in the Carolina League (55-31), and they have claimed seven of the first nine games between Winston and Myrtle. The Birds have outscored the Dash 43-20, which calculates to an average score of 4.8-2.2. In their only set in the Triad thus far this season, the Dash collected a win in the opener before Myrtle Beach rallied for a series victory.
MONDAY DANISH Tyler Danish was the starter in Winston-Salem's lone victory at Myrtle Beach last week. He gave up just one run in four-and-a-third innings in his first outing since June 22 and his second since June 8. Danish was skipped in the rotation in the last go-around before the All-Star break. He then went on the disabled list shortly after his first start of half two. The 19-year-old has already logged 67.2 innings between Winston and Low-A Kannapolis after 30 frames of work last year.
WINCING-SALEM Winston-Salem has endured some critical injuries this week. On Wednesday, shortstop Tim Anderson (right wrist) and right-hander Frank Montas (right knee) were placed on the disabled list. That night, Courtney Hawkins suffered a concussion and joined Anderson and Montas on the disabled list Thursday. Thus, the Dash lost two first-round picks and a pitcher who was supposed to suit up for the World Team in next weekend's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
DASH DOTS The Dash are just 9-20 when facing a left-handed starter this season...Winston-Salem is scheduled to face at least three southpaws in this four-game set...Angel Sanchez became the 12th person to start for Winston-Salem...He logged the club's 35th quality start...The Dash are 25-10 when getting a quality start, including a 13-4 mark at BB&T Ballpark.
