Salem Red Sox News Release
The Salem Red Sox open a four game series with the Frederick Keys tonight. First pitch from LewisGale Field is set for 7:05.
Dominance on the Hill: Corey Littrell and Matty Ott held the Mudcats to just five hits and two runs for a second consecutive game. The outstanding performances on the mound continues a few trends of late. After Littrell's seven innings yesterday, the Sox are now 25-9 when their starter goes six innings or more. Salem holds a 17-34 record when their starter doesn't reach the sixth. Also, despite al- lowing seven runs in the Carolina series opener, the Salem staff holds an impressive 2.31 team ERA over the last eleven games (8-3 record).
Rare Road Success: The Salem Sox came into this road trip losers of 21 of 27 away from LewisGale Field. But with a series split in Freder- ick and series win in Zebulon, the Sox produced a winning road-trip. It was the first winning trip since the 12th-18th of May, when the Sox finished 4-3 at Wilmington and Carolina. Salem had posted a be-
low .500 record on the previous three trips, and four out of the last five, before these five games.
Miller Time: Mike Miller has been everything the Sox could've hoped for since being called up on the first of June. Miller has sustained his good play with the Salem Sox over 29 games now with the club, hitting .321 with 20 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Miller has been espe- cially hot of late, with hits in six straight games. Miller holds a .500 average during his last five games (11/22). Miller's best day came on July 2nd, when he went 4-4 with a walk and two runs scored against the Frederick Keys. Mike has scored a run in seven straight games, and reached base in 13 of 15 games he's played in the second half.
A+ Aneury: Aneury Tavarez has been the surprise power leader for the Salem Sox this year. Tavarez hit his tenth long ball of the year yesterday, three clear of the second most on the team (Blair, 7). An- eury's went 2-4 in the series finale, reached base four times, and drove in four. Tavarez now holds a seven game hit streak, and has hits in eight of nine, holding a .433 average in his last nine (13/30). Tavarez has been hot for nearly five weeks now. Aneury's average hit a mid-season low .186 on June 1st. Since that point, he's hitting .330 (36/109), raising his season average to .249.
Witte on a Tear: Jantzen Witte has been on his role of late, increas- ing his Salem average back over .300. Witte has hit in four straight games, and seven of eight overall. Witte holds a .367 average over his last eight games, with five runs scored and six RBIs. Jantzen is now hitting a combined .324 between Greenville and Salem this year.
Lit-tastic: Corey Littrell was dominant against the Carolina Mudcats Sunday afternoon. After allowing the first two batters to reach on hits, Littrell allowed just one hit the rest of the way in his seven in- nings of work. Corey has gone seven innings each of his last two times out, both career highs. Littrell has consistently improved as the game goes on. Take out one rough outing where Littrell allowed seven runs in the fourth inning in Myrtle Beach, Corey has allowed just three run after the third inning, and overall just two runs all year after the fourth inning.
