Yastrzemski Homers, but 'Birds Fall, 3-1

Wappingers Falls, NY- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds 3-1 this evening at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades move to 22-17 on the year and the IronBirds fall back to 18-18. With the win, Hudson Valley is 2.5 games ahead of Aberdeen for first place in the McNamara standings.

The Renegades got things started in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Oscar Hernandez started the frame with a ground rule double that bounced over the fence in left-center field.

Darryl George then reached on a single to put runners on first and third with one out. Hernandez came home to score on a John Alexander double of the right field wall two batters later to make the score 2-0 Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley struck again off IronBirds' starter Janser Severino in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ariel Soriano hit a single with one out and scored the third run of the ball game for the Renegades on a Johnny Field double into the left field corner to make it 3-0.

Severino ended up pitching six innings in his sixth start of the year for the IronBirds. He gave up seven hits, three runs, one walk and struck out four Renegade batters. Michael Joseph pitched three innings of relief for the IronBirds. He went two innings and gave up just one hit and struck out one Renegade.

Mike Yastrzemski accounted for the lone run for the IronBirds when he launched a fastball from Eli Echarry over the right field wall in the top of the ninth inning to make it 3-1 in favor of the Renegades. Jared Breen struck out and Hector Veloz flew out to left fielder Granden Goetzman for the final out of the ball game.

Sam Kimmel went 2 for 4 with two infield singles and Trey Mancini had two hits in four at bats, including a lead-off double in the top of the fourth inning.

Sam Griset got the start tonight for Hudson Valley. The left-handed pitcher went six innings and gave up four hits. He did not surrender any runs or walks and struck out seven IronBirds' batters.

Right-handed pitcher Eli Echarry came in to pitch in the top of the seventh inning in relief of Griset. Echarry pitched three innings, giving up three hits, no walks and struck out three. He allowed the solo home run to Yastrzemski in the top of the ninth inning.

Severino falls to 0-4 on the year as he takes the loss in tonight's game. Griset picks up his first win and improves his record to 1-2. Eli Echarry collects his first save of the year as well.

Game two of this two game set takes place tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Mitch Horacek (3-1, 1.90) gets the nod for the IronBirds.
