CT Tigers and Spinners Split Double Header

Norwich, CT - In game one of the double header the Lowell Spinners defeated the Connecticut Tigers by a score of 6-0 Friday night at Dodd Stadium. The highlight of the ball game was the performance by starting pitcher RHP Jamie Callahan (2-1) who was near perfect. Callahan pitched six scoreless innings allowing just one hit and struck out eight batters.

Callahan shut down the first 15 batters he faced and had a perfect game going into the sixth when 3B Brett Harrison (1-2) led off the inning with hit single into center field to break up the perfect game. DH Kevin Mager (4-4) was overshadowed by Callahan's performance. Mager picked up four singles, three RBI's and one run scored.

The Tigers bats struggled as they went 2-22 as a team and struck out 10 times. Starter RHP Hunter Scantling (1-2) was roughed up as he only pitched 1.2 innings allowing five runs on nine hits. Spinners 2B Carlos Asuaje (2-4) provided a spark in the first inning with an RBI triple that gave Lowell and early 1-0 lead.

In game two of the double header the Tigers defeated the Spinners by a score of 3-2. The highlight of the game came in extra innings in the bottom of the eighth inning when RF Ben Verlander's (1-3) hit a walk-off solo homerun to win the game. It was the first pitch on the inning by RHP Jonathan Aro (2-2).

LF Tyler Gibson (1-2) continued his hot streak in the late part of July with a two-run double in the second inning that scored 3B Brett Harrison (2-2) and 1B Patrick Leyland (2-3) to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Leyland and Harrison were the only two on the Tigers to have a multiple hit game.

Both teams struggled at the plate in game two. The Tigers were 2-8 with runners in scoring position and left a total of seven men on base. While the Spinners went 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left six on base. The Spinners as a team struck out a total of 13 times.

The Tigers used three pitchers to combine for the eight inning victory. Starter RHP Chase Edwards pitched 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits and struck out eight batters faced. RHP Johnnie Kirkland pitched 1.1 innings and allowed no runs on two hits and struck out three. Winning pitcher RHP Jonathan Maciel (1-0) pitched three innings allowing no runs on one hit and struck out two batters.

The Tigers and the Lowell Spinners wrap up their three-game series at Dodd Stadium tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. In the series finale RHP Buck Farmer (0-1, 5.14) gets the start for the Tigers. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (0-0, 0.00) gets the start for the Spinners. It's Matt Cain Bobblehead Giveaway presented by CT D.O.T.
