Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Ok, so maybe the first half of the Renegades season did not end the way they wanted. Facing a difficult Tri-City squad, the ValleyCats came into Dutchess Stadium and won a pair of shutouts as the 'Gades offense was limited to just eight hits in the two losses. After splitting 18 games outside the McNamara Division, Hudson Valley was 21-17 coming into Friday night's game against the Aberdeen IronBirds. The teams met at The Dutch to open the month of July, and the 'Birds walked out with a three-game sweep. This time around, however, Ben Griset and Eli Echarry combined to shut them down in a 3-1 victory.
It seems like the second inning consistently produces runs for the Renegades. Oscar Hernandez led off against the righty Janser Severino with a hard double to the left field wall. Two batters later, Darryl George singled to put runners at the corners with one out. John Alexander missed his first home run by a few feet as he bounced a double off the right field wall to score Hernandez and give the 'Gades the early lead. Granden Goetzman then turned on a 2-2 pitch with an RBI single to left to make it 2-0.
The IronBirds' best chance against Griset came after Trey Mancini lined the first pitch of the fourth inning down the left field line. Conor Bierfeldt sent a groundball to short and Mancini tried running to third, but George's throw to get Mancini was in time as Ty Young applied the tag for the first out. A single by Mike Yastrzemski put the tying runs at first and second, but Jared Breen flew out to Goetzman in left field. Hector Veloz then hit a sinking line drive into right, but Johnny Field laid out with a spectacular driving catch to save a run and end the inning.
Hudson Valley added a run against Severino (0-4) in the fifth that started with a one-out single by second baseman Ariel Soriano. Field then tacked on his second base hit and an RBI with a hard double down into the left field corner, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
Echarry pitched a perfect seventh and a scoreless eighth despite a pair of Aberdeen singles. In their final ups in the ninth, the IronBirds provided a brief scare when Yastrzemski put a charge into his first professional home run on a deep shot down the right field line. With the score 3-1, Echarry struck out Jared Breen and got Veloz to fly out to left to earn his first save of the season.
