Lowell Spinners News Release
NORWICH, CONN. - Jamie Callahan was untouchable through five innings while the Spinner offense awoke from their recent slumber, scattering a season-high 15 hits in just seven innings as Lowell cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Connecticut Tigers in Game One of a doubleheader at Dodd Stadium.
Lowell (20-15) took advantage of terrible Connecticut (15-22) defense to score the game's first two runs. With one out in the first, Tzu-Wei Lin reached on an error and raced all over to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. Carlos Asuaje crushed a triple deep into left field to score Lin and team RBI leader Kevin Mager followed with an RBI single. The team then loaded the bases and threatened to blow it open, but could not capitalize.
However, one inning later, the Spinners left no doubt, chasing Tiger starter Hunter Scantling from the game with a string of singles. Forrestt Allday, Lin and Asuaje all singled to load the bases and Mager capitalized once more, singling to left to score Allday and Lin. The next batter, Jose Colorado, also singled to score Asuaje. After Cleuluis Rondon lined out and the Tigers made a pitching change, Minnich knocked in his first RBI with a single to right.
Callahan (2-1, 4.55), who hadn't pitched in almost two weeks, faced the minimum amount of hitters in his six innings, striking out eight. The 18-year old from Florence, South Carolina had struggled in his last four outings but was dominant tonight in Game 1, retired the first 15 hitters before allowing a single to Tiger third baseman Brett Harrison in the sixth. 2013 Red Sox 7th round pick Mike Adams made his long-awaited season debut and breezed through an inning of relief, allowing just one hit, striking out one.
Five of the first seven hitters in the Spinner lineup had multi-hit games, led by Mager's 4-for-4 night. Mager, who leads the team in most offensive categories, raised his average to .314 with three RBI. Allday, Lin and Asuaje combined to go 6-for-13 at the top of the batting order with Allday also pushing his average over .310.
Game Two is scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of Game One and Daniel McGrath (0-1, 4.50) will get the start for the Spinners.
