Spikes' Big Inning Thrills Big Crowd in 4-1 Win

July 26, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - It was a "happy happy happy" evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday night as 5,256 fans, the largest crowd at the ballpark since 2011, saw the State College Spikes use a big third inning to surge past the Auburn Doubledays and take a 4-1 victory.

A large portion of the crowd also came out to see Mountain Man from A&E's hit TV show Duck Dynasty, and both he and the Spikes (19-18) proved to be a hit with the fans. While the famously slow-moving Mountain Man signed autographs for approximately two hours after the end of the game, Carson Kelly and the State College bats quickly put their own stamp on the night with a four-run third inning.

Kelly keyed the offensive efforts with his bases-loaded, two-run single to plate the last two runs of the Spikes' big frame. The 2012 second-round draft choice also notched his fourth three-hit game in the last eight days.

Jimmy Bosco plated the first State College run with an RBI triple to the gap in right-center field and Cesar Valera added an RBI single of his own as part of a multi-hit performance. Bruce Caldwell doubled to aid the Spikes' cause as well.

State College also got a terrific effort from the pitching tandem of Kevin Herget (4-0) and Chase Brookshire (1). Herget started and went a career-long five shutout innings to keep his perfect record as a professional intact. The right-hander gave up five hits and a walk while striking out four. Brookshire followed Herget on the mound and also made his longest professional outing, going four innings for the save. The southpaw yielded a run on four hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Auburn (12-26) starter Deion Williams (0-5) took the loss after allowing all four Spikes runs on a total of eight hits and two walks, one of which was intentional. Williams struck out four in the effort.

The Doubledays only run scored on Greg Zebrack's single in the seventh inning. Cody Gunter contributed a three-hit game for Auburn to lead its offense.

The crowd of 5,256 was the largest since the 2011 home finale, which drew 5,343 fans. State College is now 10-3 in its last 13 home games.

Saturday, the Spikes and Doubledays conclude their two-game mini-series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with a 7:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send right-hander Arturo Reyes (0-1) to the mound for his second start and fourth overall appearance. Auburn will go with right-hander Austin Voth (0-0), the 2013 fifth-round draft choice of the Nationals out of the University of Washington.

T he Spikes will wear special 1980's Cardinals-style jerseys for the game, which will be up for bids in a Jersey-off-the-Back Auction to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. The auction and the spectacular post-game FIREWORKS show are presented by PSECU and ESPN Radio 1450.
