State College Spikes News Release
-SPIKES START HOMESTAND AGAINST DOUBLEDAYS TONIGHT: The State College Spikes are set to open up a two-game set against the Auburn Doubledays tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College took two out of three against Auburn earlier this season, including a team record-tying 20-hit performance on June 21 at Falcon Park. The Spikes currently sit two games out of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead. State College is 32-41 all-time against the Doubledays, and 15-20 in home games.
-LAST NIGHT: Jimmy Bosco notched his 12th multi-hit game of the year, but Juan Herrera's two-run homer proved to be the difference as the State College Spikes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Thursday night at Eastwood Field. Bosco contributed two of the six Spikes hits, while David Washington added a ground-rule double and scored the only State College run in the seventh inning. Steven Ramos also collected a single, and the New York-Penn League batting leader now has a hit in 17 of his last 21 games. The Spikes were behind early, however, as Josh McAdams's sacrifice fly to right field in the second scored the game's first run. Herrera then homered to the right-field bullpen in the third inning, clearing the four-foot wall to put Mahoning Valley ahead, 3-0. Luis Perez brought in Washington with a two-out single in the seventh to trim the deficit, but the Spikes would get no closer.
-HERGET, BROOKSHIRE THE MOUND TANDEM FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Kevin Herget heads to the hill to start a "piggyback" tandem for State College tonight against the Doubledays. Herget allowed four runs, three earned, against Connecticut in his last outing on Saturday. Left-hander Chase Brookshire, who has not allowed an earned run in his first three pro appearances, follows Herget on the mound tonight. Brookshire was selected by the Cardinals in the 20th round of the 2013 draft, while Herget was a 39th round pick.
-WILLIAMS TO MAKE THE START FOR DOUBLEDAYS: Right-hander Deion Williams will go to the mound for Auburn tonight. Williams, a 16th-round draft choice of the Nationals in 2011, spent most of the past two years as an infielder with the Gulf Coast League Nationals after being selected out of Redan High School in Georgia. The Stone Mountain, GA native is the son of former major leaguer Dion Williams and the grandson of longtime Red Sox and Brewers first baseman George Scott.
-RAMOS ON A TEAR FOR STATE COLLEGE: Steven Ramos is back out in front in the New York-Penn League with a .376 batting average, and is fourth in on-base percentage at .408. The outfielder is hitting .397 with a .438 on-base percentage, four doubles and five RBI in the month of July. The Tracy, CA native is also leading the Spikes with seven stolen bases this year.
-SPIKE MARKS: 2009 Spikes pitcher Victor Black made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, becoming the 21st player to reach the major leagues after playing in State College...Black recorded the final out of the eighth inning...Bruce Caldwell is T-7th in the NYPL in batting average (.319) and third in on-base percentage (.419), with three walks and a hit by pitch during Wednesday's doubleheader
