Yard Goats Come Back to Beat Sea Dogs 8-5 in Maine

Portland, ME - The Hartford Yard Goats (43-34) came from behind to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs (27-51) by the score of 8-5 on Thursday evening at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine in the first of a five game series. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth inning, the Yard Goats rallied to score six unanswered runs for their third win in four games. Hartford scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before putting up four runs in the seventh inning. Pat Valiaka tied the game with an RBI single scoring Raimel Tapia and Rosell Herrera put the Yard Goats in front with an RBI single scoring Valiaka. Hartford relievers Johendi Jiminian, Austin House, Jerry Vasto and Matt Carasiti allowed just one run on four hits in 8.1 innings. Herrera had a single, double and home run and drove in three runs and scored twice for Hartford.

The Yard Goats scored a pair of runs in the first inning off Sea Dogs starter Teddy Stankiewicz. Raimel Tapia began the game with a single and Pat Valiaka followed with a single, putting runners at first and second base. Dillon Thomas' fielder's choice grounder got Tapia to third base and he scored on an infield grounder by Rosell Herrera putting Hartford in front 1-0. Ryan McMahon then ripped a 2-out RBI double, scoring Thomas and giving the Yard Goats a 2-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs rallied and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and chased Hartford starter Alex Balog from the game. Yoan Moncada began the bottom of the inning by cracking a triple off the right field fence and would score on Mauricio Dubon's infield hit, making it 2-1. After Cody Decker walked with one out Nate Freiman singled home Dubon and tied the game 2-2. Jake Romanski and Tim Roberson followed with RBI singles and put the Sea Dogs on top 4-2.

Portland added a run on Tim Roberson's solo home run in the fourth inning off reliever Johendi Jiminian to make it 5-2. It was the only run allowed by the reliever in 3.2 innings of work.

However, the Yard Goats chipped away with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and took the lead. Zach Osborne led off the fifth inning with a single and scored on a 2-out hit by Dillon Thomas, making it a 5-3 game. Rosell Herrera's solo home run in the sixth inning put the Yard Goats within a run at 5-4 in the final inning for Stankiewicz.

The Yard Goats batted around and scored four runs off reliever William Jerez in the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. Raimel Tapia doubled and Pat Valiaka knocked him in to tie the game 5-5, with a one out single. Dillon Thomas walked and Rosell Herrera ripped a single to center field scoring Valaika and giving the Yard Goats a 6-5 lead. Ryan McMahon followed with a single, scoring Thomas and making it 7-5 Hartford. The Yard Goats added a run on Jackson Williams bases loaded walk to make it 8-5.

The Yard Goats continue a five game in 4-day series against the Portland Sea Dogs with a doubleheader on Friday evening at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine (6:00 PM). In game one, LHP Sam Howard will start for the Yard Goats and Kevin McAvoy will start for the Sea Dogs. The game will be broadcast live on News Radio 1410 WPOP.
