Akron RubberDucks News Release

Erie right-hander Tommy Collier weaved eight innings of shutout baseball with five strikeouts Thursday night as the SeaWolves blanked the Akron RubberDucks 1-0 at Jerry Uht Park.

Turning Point

Erie designated hitter Cory Jones lined a two-out, RBI single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning off Akron reliever Cole Sulser (0-3) to snap a scoreless tie. It was Jones' second hit of the night.

Winging It

Collier (7-5) was brilliant over eight innings as he celebrated being named to the EL West All-Star team. He allowed just two hits, no walks and fanned five. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Todd Hankins led off with a pop-up to right field that dropped in for a hustle double. Collier then retired the next 13 in a row before giving up a single to Daniel Salters in the 8th. It was Collier's second victory against the RubberDucks this season. Closer Joe Jimenez struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save. For Akron, starter D.J. Brown threw five shutout innings. He allowed four hits and walked two. Brown worked around trouble all night, stranding six Erie base runners during his five innings.

Duck Tales

Salters was 1-3, and has hit safely in all three games he has played since his promotion from Lynchburg.
