
Yankees Sweep Two from IronBirds

Staten Island, NY- The Staten Island Yankees swept a double header from the Aberdeen IronBirds, winning game one 4-3 and the nightcap 5-0.
The Yankees scored the final four runs of the ballgame to take a 4-3 win. The IronBirds jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Glynn Davis scored in the first after a leadoff single. Austin Knight had an RBI single in the third inning, scoring Joe Velleggia, making it 2-0. Kyle Hoppy scored the final run of the game for the IronBirds after leading off the fourth with a double and scoring on a delayed double steal.
Reymond Nunez and Tyler Austin homered for the Yankees, who scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
Devin Jones took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season. Tyler Wilson got the start and went five innings, allowed three hits, two runs (both earned), walked two, and struck out five.
In game two, Yankee pitching dominated again in a 5-0 Staten Island win. The IronBirds totaled three hits for the ballgame, all of them singles. The Yankees retired the final 15 IronBirds to come to the plate.
In the fourth inning, the Yankees knocked IronBirds starter Alex Schmarzo out of the game. Staten Island sent 10 men to the plate, scoring five runs on four hits, while taking advantage of an Aberdeen error. Schmarzo allowed four consecutive singles before being replaced by Travis Strong. Strong only was able to go a third of an inning before Enrico Jimenez came on to finish the inning.
Schmarzo pitched three innings, allowed four hits, three runs (one earned), striking out three. Zach Varce improves to 2-0, getting the win for the Yankees.
The IronBirds return home tomorrow night to begin their final home stand of the 2011 season. Jose Mota (1-3, 7.16) will get the start for the IronBirds, who are looking to snap out of a five game losing streak. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
