Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
After two rain-outs due to Hurricane Irene, the Aberdeen IronBirds are back in action tonight at the Staten Island Yankees (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Yankees). The two teams will play a double-header tonight at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The IronBirds have lost three straight games after falling to the Yankees on Friday night 8-4. In game one, the IronBirds will have right-hander Tyler Wilson on the mound. Wilson has allowed two runs or less in each of his four starts this season for Aberdeen. He'll go up against right-hander Bryan Mitchell. Former first-round pick Matt Hobgood will get the start in the nightcap.
Hurricane Irene
The IronBirds have been rained-out the past two days due to Hurricane Irene. Saturday's rain-out at Ripken Stadium will not be made up. Yesterday's postponement is being made up tonight as part of a double-header.
Double-Headers
Because of rain-outs, the IronBirds will play two double-headers in the season's final week. One is scheduled for today at Staten Island. The second double-dip will be played this Friday evening at the Hudson Valley Renegades.
Those Darn Yankees
Staten Island has had Aberdeen's number in 2011. The Yankees are a perfect 7-0 against the IronBirds this season. Aberdeen has been outscored by Staten Island this season 46-22. The Yankees currently hold the best record in the New York-Penn League.
Knight's Hitting Streak
Outfielder Austin Knight has now hit safely in nine straight games. The hitting streak is tied for the third-longest by an IronBirds player this season. Knight has raised his batting average 36 points during the recent stretch. He's hitting .378 over those nine games.
Berry Promoted
Right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry has been promoted to the High-A Frederick Keys. In 10 games for Aberdeen, Berry went 1-1 with a 4.84 ERA. The right-hander spent much of the 2011 season on the disabled list, nursing a shoulder injury. He split last season between the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds and Frederick.
