Cyclones Split a Pair with Hudson Valley

Brooklyn, NY -- After a two-day hiatus, the Brooklyn Cyclones (39-29) took the field for a doubleheader against the Hudson Valley Renegades (33-36). Clinging to just a half game lead over the Williamsport Crosscutters in the Wild Card chase entering the day, the Cyclones took the opener by a score of 3-1 but fell in the nightcap by a score of 7-0.

Making his twelfth start of the season, Marco Camarena yielded a leadoff single in the top of the first, but avoided a big inning by retiring the next three batters.

However, an inning later Chris Winder launched an opposite field homerun to left with two outs for the first tally of the ballgame and a 1-0 lead. Camarena entered the game sporting a 1-0 mark with a 1.77 ERA in four starts in August.

The Cyclones knotted the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Travis Taijeron connected on a two-out, RBI double to score Richard Lucas all the way from first to tie the game. For Taijeron, 22 of his 50 hits this season have gone for extra bases.

Taijeron was a difference maker yet again as Brooklyn scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Richard Lucas took first base on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a Cole Frenzel walk before Taijeron laced a triple to right-center off of Renegades reliever Brooks Belter for a 3-1 lead.

Nick Carr allowed a leadoff single to center but was aided by a 6-4-3 double play before striking out Kyle Holloway looking in the top of the seventh to earn his first save of the season. Camarena (3-3) recorded his first win at MCU Park in 2011, finishing with just a run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. The Cyclones are now 6-3 against Hudson Valley and 5-1 at home this season.

Game Two

Brooklyn struggled to mount any sort of offensive in part two of the doubleheader, as they were unable to put a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning. Starter Eduardo Aldama (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs in 2.2 innings. Hudson Valley starter Jacob Partridge (3-6) earned the win after tossing 6.1 scoreless innings.

Danny Muno singled to lead off the bottom of the first, but was promptly erased on a ground ball double play. The single was only one of three base hits the Cyclones were able to collect in the nightcap.

Hudson Valley drew first blood, plating six runs and sending eleven men to bat in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jeff Malm singled to left field to plate the first run of the game. The second run came a batter later on a soft hit line drive to shallow center field. With the bases still loaded, Aldama recorded a strike out for the first out of the inning, but the second out came on a fly out to left field that was deep enough for the runner on third tag up on. With two runners on and the Renegades now leading 3-0, Chris Winder tripled to deep right field to plate another two runs. Winder was then plated on an infield single to chase Aldama and extend Hudson Valley's lead to six runs. RHP Ernesto Yanez, who was brought on in relief, yielded a walk to his first batter, but induced a fielder's choice on a groundball for the final out of the inning.

The Renegades added another run in the top of the fifth. With two outs and a runner on second, Jonathan Kosco put Hudson Valley up 7-0 with a RBI-single to right field. However, on the play, Kosco was thrown out attempting to advance to second for the final out of the inning.

Brooklyn loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but all runners were left stranded and the Cyclones fell to the Renegades, 7-0.

The Cyclones will begin a three-game road series against the Lowell Spinners (28-39) tomorrow, Tuesday, August 30 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Carlos Vazquez (3-2, 3.64) will take on RHP Luis Diaz (4-3, 2.87). The team will return home on Friday, September 2 to take on the Staten Island Yankees at 7:00 p.m. After the first game of the last series of the regular season, there will be fireworks.
