Cutters Drop Scrappers in 14 Innings

August 29, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

The Williamsport Crosscutters triumphed Monday night in their longest game of the year, defeating the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 4-3 in 14 innings at Historic Bowman Field.

The Scrappers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, picking up two runs off Cutters starter Colin Kleven. Cody Elliot's RBI forceout and John Barr's RBI single put the visitors on the board 2-0.

Williamsport notched it up in the fifth, as Maikel Franco's RBI triple and Harold Martinez's sac fly scored a pair of Cutters runs to tie 2-2. They made it 3-2 in the sixth courtesy of a two-out throwing error by Scrappers third baseman Jordan Smith.

That score held until the top of the ninth, when KC Serna lifted a game-tying solo home run to left off Cutters closer Juary Gomez.

The game stayed 3-3 all the way until the bottom of the fourteenth, when Brock Stassi drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to win it for the Cutters.

These two teams rematch here tomorrow at 7:05 before heading to Ohio to finish the series on August 31 and September 1. Every game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com
