Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers and Vermont Lake Monsters split a doubleheader on Monday night, with the Tigers taking the opener 4-3, but falling 4-0 in the nightcap at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont.

The opening game of the doubleheader was the completion of a game that was suspended back on June 25.

The Tigers came in leading 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Vermont quickly tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and took a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a run on an RBI single from Chad Oberacker.

Connecticut would mount a comeback in the eighth inning off the most unlikely of pitchers from Vermont.

All-Star reliever Jeff Urlaub came on with a 1.44 ERA and having not given up a homer in 31.1 innings pitcher. P.J. Polk led off the frame with a base hit to put the tying run on base. Three batters later, Tigers All-Star Dean Green smashed a two-run bomb to right field, his seventh home run of the season and the first given up by Urlaub all season. The long ball gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead, which they would hold on to for the win.

Fernando Celis and Jeff Barfield combined for four shutout innings to preserve the win. While Celis earned his first win of the season, Barfield picked up his third save. Urlaub suffered his first loss of the year for Vermont.

In game two it was all Seth Frankoff for Vermont. He twirled a complete game one-hit gem and was a Jeff Holm bunt single away from a perfect game. Frankoff retired the last 17 Tigers batters he faced to earn his fifth win of the season.

The Lake Monsters offense got started early with a two-run homer in the first inning from Nick Rickles and added a run each in the third and fifth inning.

Wilsen Palacios, who had tossed three straight complete games, suffered the loss by going five innings and giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits.

The Tigers will head back home for the final seven games of the regular season over six days. They entertain the Hudson Valley Renegades for a three-game series, before the Lowell Spinners come in for four games in three days. Tomorrow night's Tigers-Renegades game is set for 7:05 PM at Dodd Stadium.
