Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees have announced that LHP Nestor Cortes and OF Leonardo Molina have been promoted to Class A Charleston in a pair of moves on Friday and Sunday, plunging the two newest members of the RiverDogs into the fold as they make their Single-A debuts in the weekend series against Hickory. In corresponding moves on Friday, OF Carlos Vidal was assigned back to Extended Spring Training and RHP Domingo Acevedo was placed on the 7-day disabled list (retroactive to May 4) with a day-to-day lower body injury.

Cortes, a 21-year-old native of Hialeah, FL, will make his Single-A debut on Sunday evening after spending last season in rookie ball Pulaski. With the Yankees in the Appalachian League, the lefty posted a 6-3 record with a 2.26 ERA in 12 appearances, 10 of them starts, while striking out 66 batters in 63.2 innings to go along with 10 walks. Now in his fourth season of professional baseball, Cortes touts a career 7-6 record with a 2.61 ERA in 63.2 innings of work after being drafted by the Yankees in the 36th round of the 2013 draft Hialeah High School.

Molina, a 6'2" 180-pound roving outfielder, looks to make a lasting impact after officially joining the RiverDogs roster on Friday. The 19 year old out of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, played two seasons with the Gulf Coast League Yankees. In 2014, Molina played in 53 games seeing 192 plate appearances with 18 runs, off of 37 hits, 10 doubles, a home run, and 21 runs batted in. In 2015 the speedy outfielder picked his game up, brandishing a .247/.290/364 slash line through 48 games, touting 40 hits and 17 RBI with nine doubles, along with a pair of triples and two home runs. In those two years with the Gulf Coast League Yankees, Molina accounted for 109 put outs in 114 fielding chances, and recorded just two errors.

The RiverDogs will continue a four-game series with the reigning South Atlantic League Champions, the Hickory Crawdads, on Sunday starting at 5:05pm at The Joe. Charleston will roll Cortes out on the mound against Hickory's RHP Peter Fairbanks (1-2, 7.64).
