Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Asheville Tourists and the Delmarva Shorebirds played extra-innings on Sunday afternoon. After the first nine innings finished in a 1-1 tie, both teams prepared for a possible lengthy afternoon. Delmarva made sure the extra baseball would be short lived by plating two runs in the top of the tenth for a 3-1 win.

Delmarva's Brian Gonzalez limited Asheville to only one run through six innings but Tourists starter Peter Lambert was even more impressive. Lambert tossed five shutout innings and recorded a season-best six strikeouts. Lambert departed with the Tourists in front 1-0; however, the Shorebirds quickly tied up the game with an RBI groundout in the sixth.

Asheville's lone run was scored when Carlos Herrera delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Carlos finished the game 2-fo-4. The Tourists were held scoreless the rest of the way by Ryan Meisinger and Christian Turnipseed. The Shorebirds relievers combined to pitch four shutout innings.

The Tourists used a total of five pitchers in the game. With one out in the top of the tenth, Delmarva strung together a rally. Cedric Mullins doubled and took third on Ryan Mountcastle's single. Natanael Delgado then doubled home Mullins to break the tie game. Yermin Mercedes followed with an RBI single to cap the rally.

Asheville did manage to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the tenth but Chris Rabago flew out to end the game. The series is now knotted up at one game apiece with the next contest scheduled for Monday night at 7:05pm.
