CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs took a 7-2 loss to the Hickory Crawdads as Nestor Cortes delivered a quality start in his first outing in a RiverDogs uniform in front of 3,237 for Mother's Day at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Sunday afternoon.

Cortes was promoted to Charleston (19-10) earlier Sunday and got the nod to make his first appearance at the Single-A level. Cortes pitched six strong innings in the no-decision, allowing just a run on four hits, six strikeouts, and no walks issued.

Charleston still remains atop of the South Atlantic League Southern Division, holding a 3.5 game lead over the second place Columbia Fireflies.

Charleston got on the board first in the bottom of the first after Connor Spencer drove in Chris Gittens who doubled, on a single to center field to put the RiverDogs up 1-0.

Angel Aguilar drove in the second run for Charleston in the fourth on a double down the left field line, driving in Spencer from first after his leadoff single.

Hickory scored seven unanswered runs with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth, before putting up a crooked number in the top of the eighth.

Chris Garia slugged his second home run of the season off of Cortes in the top of the sixth on a fly ball that just stayed on the right side of the left field foul pole to get the Crawdads within one.

In the seventh, David Palladino (1-1) picked up the loss and blown save after relenting five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.

Tyler Sanchez hit the second Hickory home run of the game to tie the score at two apiece.

In the eighth, the wheels fell off as Palladino issued two walks before giving up a single to Jose Almonte and a double to LeDarious Clark that each drove in a pair, putting the Crawdads up 6-2.

Claudio Custodio entered for the final four outs of the game for Charleston, and gave up a run on a Sanchez RBI ground out. Frandy De la Rosa opened up the ninth with a standup double to right, followed by a one out single by Dylan Moore. Sanchez then grounded out to short, allowing De la Rosa to score.

The Charleston RiverDogs were 11-0 in games, leading after the sixth inning, but the perfect streak came to an end Sunday afternoon as Hickory scored seven unanswered runs over the final four frames.

Ballpark Fun

The Charleston RiverDogs celebrated Mother's Day on another Holy City Sunday down at The Joe. Kids were able to play catch on the field before the game and run the bases afterwards. The RiverDogs also welcomed the five millionth fan to enter the gates of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The lucky fan had the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch along with winning a specialty jersey and getting the royal treatment at the ballpark.
