Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Jonathan Frebis threw six innings and gave up just one unearned run to lead Kannapolis to a 3-2 win over the BlueClaws on Mother's Day at CMC Northeast Stadium.
The loss drops the BlueClaws to 9-20 on the year and they've dropped the first two games of the four-game series with the Intimidators. Kannapolis improves to 14-15 on the season.
Lakewood had the tying run on second base in the ninth but Taylore Cherry struck out Damek Tomscha to end the game and hand the BlueClaws their 8th one-run loss of the year (2-8) and 14th loss by three runs or less or extra innings (4-14).
Kannapolis got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI single by Antonio Rodriguez and a balk from Franklyn Kilome to open a 2-0 lead. Kilome, who got out of jams in the first two innings, got out of another one in the fifth to keep it a 2-0 game.
Kilome, who fell to 0-4 with the loss, came out after five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. All six of his strikeouts came with runners in scoring position.
The BlueClaws got on the board in the sixth on a SAC fly by Emmanuel Marrero to score Austin Bossart, who had reached on an error. That was the only run they got off Frebis, who improved to 2-1.
Then in the seventh, Wilson Garcia doubled to extend his hitting streak to nine. Garcia, however, was thrown out trying to score on a base hit by Damek Tomscha, who was stranded at second on a groundout by Brendon Hayden to end the inning and keep the game 2-1.
Kannapolis got a run in the eighth and Lakewood a run on a Jose Pujols single in the ninth but Cherry, who earned his third save, struck out Tomscha to end the game with pinch runner Grenny Cumana on second base.
Emmanuel Marrero had two hits in the loss for Lakewood and has nine hits over his last three games (9-12).
The series with the Intimidators continues on Monday night at 7:05. RHP Jose Taveras (0-2) starts for Lakewood against RHP Luis Martinez (1-3).
