Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Thanks to an RBI single by Joseph Monge in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Greenville Drive defeated the Columbia Fireflies 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Drive were able to salvage a win on the day after falling 13-3 in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game at Fluor Field.
The sixth inning rally for the Drive (15-14) began with a two-out single through the left side by Jeremy Rivera, and thanks to a great read, he stole second base when the Fireflies (16-14) called a pitchout. Monge followed by lining a 2-2 pitch from Joe Shaw (2-2) into the right-field corner to put the Drive ahead.
Jake Cosart (1-0) got the win for Greenville with two and two-third scoreless inning of relief and three strikeouts. Bobby Poyner followed with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to notch his sixth save, which ties him for the league lead.
The Drive jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on the benefit of a pair of triples. Tate Matheny tripled with two outs in the first and scored on a single by Josh Ockimey, and Luis Alexander Basabe's triple in the second was followed by an RBI double from Chad De La Guerra.
After Columbia scored three times in the third to take the lead, Ockimey answered with a two-run blast to left-center, his sixth homer of the season, to put the Drive back ahead.
Matheny and Ockimey each picked up a pair of hits for Greenville in the second game.
The resumption of Saturday's game was all Columbia. Leading 5-0 in the fifth inning when play resumed, the Fireflies scored twice in the sixth and six more times in the seventh. A three-run triple by J.C. Rodriguez was the big hit in the seventh.
Johnny Magliozzi (2-1) came away with the win after throwing the fifth inning for the Fireflies, and Logan Boyd (3-2) suffered the loss after being knocked out in the fourth inning on Saturday.
The series continues with a 7:05 PM first pitch on Monday night. The Drive will send right-hander Marc Brakeman (1-1, 4.02) to the mound, and the Fireflies will counter with right-hander Chase Ingram (2-2, 3.38).
