Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release

PITTSBURGH, JAN. 17, 2006 -- The visiting Indiana Alley Cats defeated the Pittsburgh Xplosion 122-116 tonight to snap Pittsburgh's seven-game ABA winning streak. Janerio Spurlock led the Xplosion with 30 points and Armon Gilliam added 24 as the Xplosion's record fell to 12-8. Indiana's Chandler Thompson was the game's top scorer with 36 points and Shaun Fountain poured in 27 as the Alley Cats improved their record to 19-1, best in the ABA.

Indiana held a 15-point in the second half, propelled by fast-break baskets, strong offensive rebounding and quickness at the guard position, but the Xplosion stormed back late in the 4th quarter to tie the game at 109. In the final minutes of the game, the Alley Cats played tough defense to send the Xplosion to defeat. A long three-point shot by the Xplosion's Coleco Buie at the buzzer closed the final gap to six points.

The game at Mellon Arena was a showdown between the top two teams in the ABA's Freddie Lewis Division. With the victory, Indiana increased its lead to 7 games over the second-place Xplosion. Former Pittsburgh Steelers Dwayne Woodruff, Louis Lipps and Edmund Nelson attended the game to root for the Xplosion and meet fans.

Played on a rainy Pittsburgh night, the start of the game was delayed 30 minutes by a leak in the roof of Mellon Arena. The arena management acted quickly to address the problem and used equipment to hang a huge tarp that protected the basketball court and players from drops of water.
