Sound Adds "Cookie" To Line-Up

January 17, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release

Patchogue, NY- Another thing that makes the new ABA unique is the "13th Man Rule", which allows a team to dress a celebrity for a game. The 'celebrity player' will be in full uniform, sit at the bench with the team, and get in the game and play.

The Strong Island Sound have announced that for the January 20th game at Suffolk Community College versus the Newark Express and their head coach Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins, Patchogue's own Ed "Cookie" Jarvis will be joining them. The 6'6" 419 pound competitive eater will try his hand at basketball.

Cookie has been a competitive eater for 5 years and has numerous IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) championships. He has been featured in countless newspapers, magazines, and television stories, and is a regular at the 4th of July Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest which is shown annually on ESPN. For more info please visit his web site www.hugeeaters.com .

"I'm not just a big body in the middle", stated Jarvis. "I can shoot, too". Cookie joined the Sound at a practice during the week at The Island Garden to get in sync with his new teammates. He plans to take this as serious as his eating competitions.

The Sound are interested in having more celebrities participate this season. Volunteers and suggestions are appreciated.

This is another example why going to see the Strong Island Sound is "an event, not just a game".

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
