Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY- After winning five consecutive games to start the 2007-08 season, the Strong Island Sound will hit the road to face two divisional opponents this weekend. On Friday evening, the expansion First State Fusion will host Strong Island at Delaware State University before a Sunday matinee at Drew University versus the Jersey Express.
The Sound have defeated the Fusion (1-4) in both of their previous meetings this season. On November 9, Strong Island gained their first win of the year after dropping the season opener in overtime at Westchester with a 109-92 victory in Delaware. Two nights later, the Sound (5-1) once again topped the Fusion, this time by a score of 104-96 in the team's home opener. Led by Gordon Malone's 18 points, the Sound had seven players in double-digits in a game where all 12 saw action.
On November 18, the renamed Jersey Express came into Suffolk Community College and led by six points with four minutes to go before the Sound had a 15-2 run to put the game away, 104-97. Raphael Edwards, Strong Island's veteran power forward, was tough with 20 points and 7 boards. If the Sound is looking to once again defeat the 3-2 Express, they will have to defend Mark Jarrell, who put up 27 points in their first meeting.
The Sound's next home contest will be on Sunday, December 16 with a 4:15 pm tip-off against the Westchester Phantoms at Suffolk Community College. Former New York Liberty guard Teresa Weatherspoon's squad is 4-3 after a fast start.
Tickets are available at the venue the day of the game and by visiting www.strongislandsound.com.
