Vermont Frost Heaves News Release
South Burlington, Vt.-Hal Cohen, executive director of the Central Vermont Community Action Council, and Dan Casey, executive director of the Barre Opera House, will be on the bench, in uniform and ready to play this week as Northfield Savings Bank Community All-Stars as the Frost Heaves host two games at the Aud in Barre.
Cohen will suit up on Thursday, Dec. 6, as Vermont welcomes the Manchester Millrats for a 7:05 p.m. start. Cohen will shoot his halftime shots for the benefit of CVCAC's Emergency Services Program.
It will be M&M Beverage Centers Presents Christmas For Kids Night, with all fans encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to a deserving child. The 8-1 Millrats, 110-108 overtime winners on Thursday, are rated No. 1 in the first ABA Power Rankings, which were released today. Vermont, 6-1, is No. 2, with the undefeated San Diego Wildcats ranked third.
Casey will serve as NSB Community All-Star on Saturday, Dec. 8, when the Quebec City Kebekwa visit the Aud for a 2:05 p.m. start. Casey, who alerted the Barre Fire Department to last month's fire in the old Lash Furniture building, played at Oneonta (N.Y.) State and now serves as a youth coach in Montpelier. He will shoot his halftime shots for the benefit of the Barre Opera House.
At every home game the Frost Heaves welcome to their bench a guest player. This season Northfield Savings Bank invites fans to nominate NSB Community All-Stars by visiting their nearest NSB branch or going to nsbvt.com. Nominees may be a local celebrity; an "Everyman" Vermonter; or just an unusually good citizen or neighbor. The Community All-Star takes center stage at halftime, when he or she is given 24 seconds to sink as many free throws as possible. Northfield Savings Bank makes a donation to the charity of the All-Star's choice for every shot made.
By taking and making shots at halftime of games last season, 23 Northfield Savings Bank Community All-Stars triggered thousands of dollars in giving to charities chosen by Frost Heaves fans. Over the past five years Northfield Savings Bank has donated $1.73 million to hundreds of local organizations, with the Community All-Star program an essential part of that effort.
Vermont, which has won six of its first seven games in defense of its ABA title, is once again splitting its 18 regular-season home games evenly between Barre and Burlington.
Tickets for any Frost Heaves home game may be purchased at the door beginning an hour before tip-off; by going to flynntix.org; by calling 802-86-FLYNN; or by stopping by the Flynn's main box office at 153 Main Street in Burlington.
