Sound Temporarily Suspend Team Operations
December 20, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY- The Strong Island Sound, which have been a member of the American Basketball Association since 2005, have announced that the team is looking for a new financial partner and will temporarily suspend basketball operations until one is found.
The ownership group and corporate organization behind the team, CBMS Sports and Entertainment, began the season with a new partner that was handling the basketball operations of the club, as well as being a financial partner. Due to philosophical differences, the partnership ended recently and the current ownership group will be unable to continue any further.
"With all of our other business initiatives going on, my - and (co-owner) Michele Wuestman's - focus cannot be on basketball operations," said co-owner Darren Cioffi. "Our partners were handling the basketball end, as well as financial. Once they decided they didn't want to continue, we kept the team going for as long as we could, but now have no other choice but to suspend operations at this time. We will be unable to continue until this situation is resolved."
Cioffi further stated that the organization is looking for a new partner to take over basketball operations or to purchase the team outright.
CBMS Sports and Entertainment recently acquired the rights to hold ABA Camps and Clinics worldwide, as well as Cioffi being the CFO of the ABA. Both of these will not be affected by the Sound suspending operations. Cioffi also stated that his corporation will go forward with the planning of a proposed 6,000-seat arena as part of the county-owned land in Yaphank, and that he expects the situation with the Sound to be resolved. The arena plans included other business ventures that included the Sound.
Details concerning the Strong Island Sound will be updated on the official team website, www.strongislandsound.com, as they are available.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
