LEADING OFF: West Virginia beat Greenville 4-2 on Wednesday evening in the series finale. Tito Polo doubled to lead off the game and scored on an error. The Drive took a 2-1 lead in the second, but the Power responded with two runs in the top of the third, keyed by Ke'Bryan Hayes first of two hits and his second run batted in of the night. John Bormann doubled in the fifth and scored on a bunt single and a throwing error to close the scoring at 4-2. Logan Sendelbach did not factor in the decision after working four and two-thirds. Jake Burnette followed with two and a third scoreless for the victory and Tate Scioneaux pitched two innings for his second save. Hayes led the Power with two hits and two runs batted in as West Virginia took the series 2-1.
STILL ROLLING: Greenville plated two runs against West Virginia starter Logan Sendelbach in the second inning Wednesday, snapping a 27 inning scoreless inning streak by Power starters. West Virginia's starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 0.76 after seven games.
HOME OPENING HISTORY: Appalachian Power Park opened on this day in 2005 as West Virginia beat Hagerstown 8-3. Derek Decarlo earned the win and Yovanni Gallardo notched the save with 5,354 fans in attendance. The Power are 7-4 in home openers since 2005.
FIRST OF MANY: West Virginia and Lexington meet for their first of 20 games when they take the field this evening. The Power have played the Legends ore than any other South Atlantic League opponent since 2005, having met 213 times. West Virginia went 16-4 against Lexington last season and lead the all-time set 114-99. The Power hold an even 52-52 mark in the series at Appalachian Power Park.
HOME COOKED: In 2015, the Power amassed a league-high and franchise-record 48 wins at Appalachian Power Park. The offense hit .277 at home with 39 home runs and 351 runs scored over 70 games. The Power batted .261 on the road with 29 home runs and 324 runs scored. The pitching staff was better at home as well, going 48-22 with a combined ERA of 3.10 at Appalachian Power Park, compared to a 39-30 mark away with a 3.66 earned run average.
HELTON ON THE HILL: Bret Helton gets the call in the home opener for his second start of the season. The right-hander pitched five shutout innings at Greensboro in a no-decision on Saturday.
SILENT NIGHTS: On Monday evening, the Power were shutout for the first time this season. On Tuesday, West Virginia pitchers worked their first shutout of the season. The 87-52 2015 club won nine times by shutout and blanked seven opponents over 139 games.
HOT START: Tito Polo went 2-4 Wednesday and extended his hitting streak to six in a row. The center fielder is batting .360 this season and has a team-high five runs batted in.
POWER POINTS: The next former Power player to reach the Majors will be the 50th to do so in franchise history... Ryan Nagle's hitting and on-base streaks were snapped at five and six games, respectively, with an 0-4 performance Wednesday.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 7-3 to Detroit at PNC Park. Ryan Vogelsong allowed one run over five innings in a spot start, but the Tigers scored four in the sixth against the bullpen... Indianapolis doubled up Toledo 6-3. Jameson Tallion pitched six innings in his first start since September 1, 2013... Altoona outlasted Akron 9-5. Anderson Feliz, Edwin Espinal and Eric Wood drove in two runs each... Bradenton edged Tampa 4-1.
PROMO UPDATE: West Virginia closes out its opening homestand with a 10:35 A.M. Grand Slam School Day on April 20 against the Kannapolis Intimidators. Gates will open at 9:30 A.M. The Power will also host Rome in a school day contest on April 27.
