West Virginia Shuts out Legends 5-0

West Virginia starter Bret Helton and three relievers combined for a four-hit shutout as the Power blanked the Lexington Legends 5-0 Thursday night in Charleston.

The Power scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when Tito Polo singled, stole second and came home on a single by Mitchell Tolman.

They added three runs in the second. Carlos Munoz walked, and Daniel Arribas reached on an error by shortstop Marten Gasparini.

After Ryan Nagle grounded into a force play at second, a double by Christian Kelly scored two runs, and a triple by Alfredo Reyes brought home another, giving the Power a 4-0 lead.

The Power scored its final run in the fifth on a single by Ke'Bryan Hayes, a wild pitch and a single by Munoz.

Helton (1-0) allowed one hit over the first five innings and got the victory. He struck out five batters and walked one.

Eric Karch worked the sixth and seventh for West Virginia, and Julio Eusebio pitched the eighth. Neither gave up a hit. The Legends loaded the bases with three singles off Seth McGarry in the ninth, but could not score.

Legends starter Corey Ray (0-1) was the losing pitcher.

The West Virginia pitching staff has allowed eight earned runs in 73 innings. The staff earned run average is 0.99.

The Legends have a record of 5-3 on the season. West Virginia is 6-2.

The series resumes Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
