Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - Crawdads starting pitcher Dillon Tate struck out 10 batters as the Intimidators fell 6-1 on Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory. Kannapolis (3-5) managed eight hits on the night, including three by Landon Lassiter, raising his average to .565 (13-23).
Tate (1-0), the Texas Rangers first round pick (fourth overall) in the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft, earned his first professional win, scattering four hits over 6.0 scoreless innings while walking none.
Hickory claimed an early lead with a pair of doubles in the home half of the first inning. After Eric Jenkins drove the first pitch of the half-inning to right-center field, Yeyson Yrizarri followed two batters later with a double down the left-field line for a 1-0 lead. The Crawdads added three more runs in the bottom of the second, stringing together five hits off Intimidators starting pitcher Zach Thompson. With the infield in and one out, Darius Day singled up the middle to score Ti'Quan Forbes and Chuck Moorman. Andy Ibanez later drove in Jenkins with a base hit to left field for a 4-0 advantage.
Frandy De La Rosa added a solo home run (1) in the fourth inning off Thompson, who left the game after 3 and 1/3 innings. Thompson (0-1), the White Sox fifth round pick from the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft, allowed five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks while suffering the loss.
Kannapolis reliever Alex Katz spun 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings, working around three hits and a walk while striking out one. Taylore Cherry tossed a scoreless eighth and gave up a run in the ninth.
Crawdads reliever Joe Palumbo limited Kannapolis to one run over 3.0 frames to earn the save (1). Kannapolis got on the board in the eighth when Lassiter singled and Corey Zangari drove him home with a base hit to left field.
Hickory finished with 13 hits as all nine Crawdads batters hit safely on the night.
The Intimidators continue this four-game series on Friday as reigning Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year LHP Tanner Banks (1-0, 5.40 ERA) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Hickory's RHP Pedro Payano (0-0, 1.80 ERA) at 7 p.m. The team returns to Kannapolis on Thursday, April 21, when the Intimidators host Delmarva for a four-game series.
