Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (3-5) kicked off their home opener Thursday night against the Charleston RiverDogs (7-1). Fresh off a 6-4 win Wednesday afternoon against the Lexington Legends, it was up to starter Phil Bickford to try to keep the winning momentum going for Augusta. However Augusta's offense was quieted most of the night thanks in large part to Charleston starter Josh Rogers Rogers (6.0 innings, 3 hits, 1 R) as he struck out eight.

Charleston got on the board early in the first inning thanks to a Trey Amburgey double which scored Hoy Jun Park. Chris Gittens doubled in the forth inning, adding to the lead for the RiverDogs, and they later scored their third run following an error by Lucius Fox.

The GreenJackets were able to finally break through in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zack Bowers was able to score. Starter Bickford, a first round draft pick in 2015, looked to capitalize on his first start of the season in which he struck out 10 batters in just 4 2/3 innings against the Rome Braves.

Bickford went farther Thursday night, lasting into the fifth inning, and had success racking up six strikeouts and walking only one batter. He allowed two earned runs. Tyler Cyr provided much needed relief out of the bullpen, tossing three superb innings, allowing one unearned run and one hit. He walked one and struck out six. Daris Vargas pitched a clean three innings for Charleston, earning the save.

Tomorrow night the GreenJackets return back to action against the Charleston RiverDogs at 7:05pm. The gates will open to fans starting at 6:00pm. Friday's pitching matchup is projected to be righty Simon De la Rosa (0-0, 10.80 ERA) against righty Logan Webb (0-0, 6.75 ERA).
