Greenville Drive News Release
Columbia, SC - Thanks to bookending big innings, the Columbia Fireflies defeated the Greenville Drive 4-1 in the team's opening home game at Spirit Communications Park.
The Fireflies (5-3) struck quickly for a pair of runs against Drive (4-4) starter Logan Boyd (1-1) in the bottom of the first. Ivan Wilson smacked the first pitch of the game to the wall in left for a double, and Kevin Kaczmarski followed with a triple to the right-center gap. Vinny Siena then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to plate the second run.
In the top half of the second, the Drive answered back with a run courtesy of an RBI single by Roldani Baldwin to score Austin Rei, who also singled.
Goose eggs galore followed from there, as Columbia starter P.J. Conlon (1-0) worked six innings and allowed just the second-inning run on seven hits with five strikeouts. The Drive received three strong innings of relief work from Dioscar Romero, who allowed only a single over three innings with five punchouts.
Greenville had offensive chances all night but left multiple men on base in four innings. Luis Alejandro and Luis Alexander Basabe picked up two hits apiece to lead the offense.
Columbia scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to three consecutive doubles by Siena, David Thompson and Dash Winningham. Johnny Magliozzi entered in the ninth and hurled a perfect inning to record his second save.
The teams will continue their four-game series in Columbia on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RH Roniel Raudes (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to take the ball for the Drive, while the Fireflies will counter with RH Thomas McIlraith (0-0, 0.00).
