PREVIEW: Tonight is Opening Night at home for the Delmarva Shorebirds. Delmarva finished the 2015 season 39-29 in their home ballpark. The 'Birds opened the season with a 4-3 road trip in Hagerstown and Kannapolis, taking three of four games in Hagerstown before losing two of three to the Intimidators. The Suns are the Class A Affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Left-hander Matthew Crownover makes his first start of the season for Hagerstown. Crownover pitched in the opening series against Delmarva, throwing three shut-out innings in relief in last Sunday's second game of the doubleheader. Crownover is a 5'11" 205 pound pitcher from Ringold, California. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft out of Clemson University. Crownover had a sensational collegiate career, going 25-12 with a 2.30 ERA in 48 appearances (46 starts). Over 278 innings of work, Crownover's strikeout-to-walk ratio was 3.28:1. He started his professional career last year in Auburn, going 1-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 49.2 innings.
ROSTER OVERVIEW: The 2016 Shorebirds feature an exciting group of talented pitchers, especially in the bullpen. In addition, Delmarva opens the year with each of the Orioles' First Round Draft picks last summer in shortstop Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder D.J. Stewart. According to Baseball America, the Shorebirds have five of the top 30 prospects in Baltimore's farm system on their opening day roster. Aside from Mountcastle and Stewart, pitchers Ofelky Peralta (#17) and Garrett Cleavinger (#26), along with catcher Alex Murphy (#27), are among the O's most highly-touted farmhands.
