RiverDogs Swat GreenJackets, 3-1, Win Fifth Straight
April 14, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Josh Rogers cruised through six innings and Hoy Jun Park roped a pair of triples as the Charleston RiverDogs hung on to an early lead to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets, 3-1, on Thursday night in front of an Opening Night crowd of 4,135 on hand at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Charleston RiverDogs (7-1) remain atop the Southern Division standings with their fifth straight win, holding a tie for the best record in the South Atlantic League with Hickory.
Rogers (1-1) got into some early trouble in the second after allowing a leadoff double to GreenJackets third baseman Kelvin Beltre but otherwise saw little action on the base paths in his second start of the season. With Beltre on second, Manuel Gerardo reached on an error by Kyle Holder at short with one out in the second but former Louisville Cardinal lefty fanned the bottom two in the order to get out of the jam.
After Gerardo reached on the blunder by the RiverDogs shortstop, Rogers went on to retire the next nine batters he faced. The only run given up by Rogers went unearned against him in the fifth when back-to-back errors by Holder allowed GreenJackets catcher Zack Bowers to score after an infield single. Holder uncharacteristically finished with three errors on the evening after committing just seven in 56 games last season in Staten Island.
Rogers finished his six innings of work allowing three hits, issuing one walk, and striking out eight.
The RiverDogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Trey Amburgey drove in Park with a single to right after the Korean infielder reached on the first of his two three-baggers with one out in the opening frame.
Chris Gittens doubled on a fly ball to right center to lead off the fourth before coming around to score on a single to the opposite field by Charleston's second baseman, Thairo Estrada, to make it 2-0.
Park tripled again in the fifth, this time with two outs, on a shot smoked to right center field and scored on an error by the GreenJackets shortstop Lucius Fox to give the RiverDogs a 3-0 advantage.
After Augusta got a run back in the fifth, Daris Vargas slammed the door in his 2016 debut after a call up yesterday from Extended Spring Training. The Dominican righty pitched three innings of no-hit ball, issuing just one walk to go along with five strikeouts.
The RiverDogs continue the series with the GreenJackets in Game Two tomorrow at 7:05pm on Friday night. The RiverDogs will send RHP Simon De la Rosa (0-0, 10.80) to the hill while the GreenJackets will counter with RHP Logan Webb (0-0, 6.75). Fans can tune in on WTMA 1250 AM in the tri-county area as well as online at riverdogs.com. Ticket information for any of the RiverDogs remaining home games this season may be secured by contacting the box office at (843)577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com.
