'Claws Comeback Effort Falls Short in 7-4 Thursday Loss to Greensboro

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Down 7-2 in the ninth, the BlueClaws got two in the inning and loaded the bases for Emmanuel Marrero. The Lakewood shortstop lifted one to left, but it was not deep enough, caught by Johnny Santos to end the game as the BlueClaws fell to Greensboro 7-4 in their home opener Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.

The loss drops the BlueClaws to 1-7 on the year and 3-13 all-time in home openers. Greensboro improved to 2-7 and snapped their six-game losing streak.

Jiandido Tromp hit a two-run single in the ninth inning off Andy Beltre that made it 7-4, but Steven Farnworth came in the game and got Emmanuel Marrero to fly out to left field to end it.

The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a two-run, two-out double in the first by Cornelius Randolph.

Tyler Gilbert blanked Greensboro for the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth. WIth one run in, he balked in the tying run, and then allowed a two run single by Angel Reyes that put Greensboro up for good.

The Hoppers would add two in the sixth on a two-run double by Zach Sullivan and one in the seventh on an RBI triple by Alex Fernandez.

Josh Tobias had four of the 10 BlueClaws hits, going 4-5. Cornelius Randolph was 1-2 and walked three times.

Gabriel Castellanos allowed two runs/one earned in five innings to earn the win while BlueClaws starter Tyler Gilbert gave up four runs in 4.2 innings and fell to 0-1.

The series with Greensboro continues on Friday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Shane Watson (0-1) throws for Lakewood against RHP Kevin Guzman (0-1).
