THE LEADOFF: West Virginia knocked off Augusta 5-1 on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Alex McRae matched DJ Snelten over three scoreless innings before West Virginia broke the game open in the fourth. Chase Simpson and Francisco Diaz singled in runs and Kevin Newman tripled in a pair before scoring on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead. The GreenJackets scored once in the bottom of the fourth. McRae worked six innings, allowing just the one run on five hits. Jose Regalado followed with two scoreless and Julio Vivas pitched a perfect ninth as the Power clinched the series win and split the season series at four wins apiece.
TWO TO GO: The Power lowered their magic number to two with a win on Friday. Any combination of two West Virginia victories or Lakewood losses will guarantee a postseason berth for the Power. Delmarva was eliminated from post-season contention on Friday. Hickory has an elimination number of two as well, which would give West Virginia the second half Northern Division crown.
RECORD WATCH: West Virginia returns to Appalachian Power Park with two victory marks in sight. With five home games remaining, the Power have matched the single-season home wins record of 44 set during the 2007 season. Entering play on Saturday with ten games remaining, the Power have 79 wins overall, putting them three shy of matching the most in any one season. The 2007 set a franchise record with 82 wins and that total was matched in 2013.
TRUE LEGENDS: The Power own a 12-3 record against the Legends this season with five games left to go against the Kansas City Royals affiliate. West Virginia owns a 110-98 all-time record against the Legends since 2005, including a 48-51 mark against Lexington at Appalachian Power Park.
BREWFEST: Colten Brewer makes his final home start of the regular season tonight. The right-hander has made ten appearances at Appalachian Power Park and ten on the road. Brewer has gone 3-5 at home with a 4.39 earned run average and 1-4 on the road with a 5.68 ERA. Brewer is also slated to start the opener at Kannapolis during the final road trip of the season.
GREAT GARCIA: In Thursday's loss, Power starter Yeudy Garcia struck out a career-high ten batters over 5.2 innings. Garcia's previous career-high in strikeouts was six which was accomplished on multiple occasions. The Power season-high in strikeouts in a single game was 11, accomplished by Colten Brewer on June 1 against Greensboro.
ON TO THE NEXT ONE: Tuesday morning saw the West Virginia Power unveiled the 2016 schedule. West Virginia will begin play on April 7 at Greensboro. Of the 70 home games, 12 will be played in April followed by 16 in May, 12 in June, 13 in July and August, and four in September.
