Two Runs Enough for Viza; Claws Win 2-1

GREENSBORO, NC - Tyler Viza gave up one run over seven innings and Jiandido Tromp robbed KJ Woods of a game-tying home run in the ninth inning as Lakewood topped Greensboro 2-1 on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park.

The win is the first for Viza (5-9) since June 1st though in his last 10 starts he has an ERA of just 2.54 and marks the seventh time in his last 10 starts that he has pitched at least seven innings.

The win for Lakewood is their fourth in their last five games and puts them at 34-27/67-62 on the season. Greensboro, who has lost four straight games, falls to 19-42/48-82 on the season.

Rony Cabrera opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third off Tyler Viza. It was Cabrera's third home run of the season and second against the BlueClaws.

Then in the sixth, Damek Tomscha hit a two-run home run off Michael Mader that put the BlueClaws up 2-1. It was Tomscha's sixth home run of the season and second of the week and enough scoring for the BlueClaws.

After Viza came out, Manaure Martinez threw a scoreless eighth and Matt Hockenberry threw a scoreless ninth, the game ending on Tromp's leaping catch at the fence. Hockenberry earned his 17th save, moving him into a tie for the fourth most in franchise history.

Tomscha had two hits in four at bats and is now 32-94 in August.

The series with Greensboro continues on Sunday at 4:00. RHP Ranfi Casimiro (7-7) starts for Lakewood against RHP Jorgan Cavanerio (4-5) for Greensboro.
